Company Car
Late in the fall of 1984 the Apple HR department rationalized many job titles, levels, salaries, etc. across the entire company. I was formally appointed a director within the Mac team. Steve informed me of this and told me that I was now entitled to a company car. This was great news! I never imagined having a free company car – who would have thought?.
But then I told Steve that I was very satisfied with the car I currently owned and drove – a very fast, jet black, Volkswagen GTI. He responded that the company was going to give me car whether I wanted it or not - and the options were all 4 door traditional sedans. An idea suddenly came into my mind – my wife, with 4 small children, would love me forever and again if I told her that SHE was getting a new car. I proposed this to Steve and he immediately agreed to it.
But instead of a sedan, I ordered a Volvo station wagon, with an extra bench seat in the "way back". Thus the only Volvo station wagon in the fleet of Apple company cars belonged to my wife!
Thanks for the car Steve - Joyce and the kids loved it!
